Concrete Slab Replacement & Shell Upgrade

A detached outbuilding had a crumbling concrete floor slab with significant damp ingress. The client wanted to convert the space into a usable workshop and storage area. We carried out a complete slab replacement with modern damp proofing, insulation and structural repairs to the shell.

Scope of Works

  • Break-out and removal of existing failed slab
  • Excavation and preparation of sub-base
  • Installation of damp-proof membrane
  • New reinforced concrete slab
  • Structural repairs to walls (repointing and patching)
  • New lintel above doorway
  • Roof inspection and minor repairs
  • Electrical installation (lighting and power)

Challenges & Solutions

The existing slab had no damp-proof membrane and was laid directly onto earth.

We excavated to a suitable depth, laid compacted hardcore, installed a heavy-duty DPM lapped up the walls and poured a new reinforced concrete slab, eliminating damp ingress completely.

Access was limited through a narrow side passage with no vehicle access.

We organised materials delivery and waste removal using wheelbarrows and a mini dumper. Concrete was pumped in through a flexible hose from the road. It required more labour but kept the project on schedule.

The Result

The outbuilding was brought back to a solid, dry and usable condition. The new slab, damp proofing and structural repairs gave the client a weather-tight shell ready for fit-out as a workshop. The project demonstrated how targeted structural work can bring neglected buildings back into productive use.
